Description

Students learn which types of shoes would be worn depending on the field and they measure and graph the lengths of the shoes.

Materials

Set up

1. What types of shoes can be worn by baseball players?

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages for the different types of footwear?

3. What type of graph can be used to show the lengths of shoes for a team?

Vocabulary

● Metal - Best for: Hard dirt, compact grass, high competition play (not allowed in youth leagues or artificial turf)

● Molded plastic - Best for: Soft or muddy fields, youth leagues

● Turf - Best for: Practice, training, artificial turf

Activity

Set Up

Bar Graph Set Up: create a bar graph, where the title is "Shoe Lengths". Label the horizontal axis "Shoe Length", and label the vertical axis "Number of Students with the numbers 1-10 indicated as the vertical line increases. There should be 10 horizontal increments and 10 vertical increments.

Review the “How to Choose Baseball Cleats Infographic” on the website provided.

Have a ruler or tape measure available for students to measure the lengths of a shoe/cleat.

Procedure

Use a ruler/tape measure to have students measure the length of one shoe to the nearest half-inch.  Use the bar graph template to graph the lengths of the shoes worn by students.
